My Life As Annie

Dad being funny with the bottle caps

A great addition to our Monday night dinner time. Dad’s chosen form of entertainment this time was picking up the bottle caps and somehow securing them to his eyes! Although slightly terrifying (reminds me a bit of the button eyes from Coraline) it was hilarious.

Moon lighting up the night sky

This photo was taken at Barbary Castle. The fact there are no lights at this country park means the night sky truly illuminates! I loved how the clouds had a perfect gap in them to frame the moon so perfectly.

My teddy Red

Look at how lovingly she’s looking up at me! Red always has this frown on her face. The hairs on her face seem to be stuck in position at this point and given she’s not real, I doubt she has much control over her facial expressions. So, I’ve decided to not take it personally. She joined me for an evening of television whilst my parents were out on Saturday night.

Chocolate marzipan heart biscuits

I’ve decided to try and keep Sunday as the prime baking day as it makes the bakes feel as though they last longer into the week. It doesn’t necessarily magic up an extra four cookies, but I like to give the illusion that it does. I’d rather have my bakes last till Tuesday instead of Monday! On this occasion, I opted for these chocolate marzipan heart biscuits in wanting to keep on theme with Valentine's (even if the day itself has passed it's technically still Valentine's because in my view you can never have too much love).

I dusted off an old children’s cookbook for this recipe. It was lovely looking back through and pointing out which bakes I’d done before. But there it was! Ah ha! The recipe I desired. The last time I’d made these biscuits was back in 2018 and for some reason, I don’t recall them involving marzipan but hey, I’ll take it!

Of course, they took me half the day to make. I don’t think this will ever change, nor do I want to try and change it. If it takes me 4 hours to make 12 biscuits, then sobeit. At least I had fun doing it! All the more, the reward of the finished biscuits looking up at me at the end makes all the difference.

Sometimes I forget whilst baking that I’m going to get some yummy treats to enjoy. I get so sucked into the process that it simply doesn’t occur to me that once all my hard labour slaving in the kitchen (this is a stretch, I swear I do enjoy it) is over, I’ll have my prize waiting for me at the end! Of course, this is to be shared with my beloved family, but I still get to enjoy a tasty ¼ of the consumption stage.

One problem with these biscuits though – their mass was severely lacking. I could have eaten one in just one bite! But I chose not to in hopes of making it last as long as possible. The only solution to this would be to double the number. That would provide 24 biscuits instead of 12. Then one can eat two at once! Excellent!

Having said that, the marzipan offered a delightful surprise, and you can’t go wrong with anything chocolate-flavoured. All in all, a solid 8/10.
